Bus Stop Outside Town Hall

January 2020

An Alfred University student walking from Op- shop to campus witnessed the events that would unfold between Balck university students and Police officers outside the town hall.

Three black students were forcibly removed from a bus by a single police officer. There was clearly an immense amount of anger radiating from the students but they tried to cooperate with the officer as they shared there side of there disagreement with the bus driver. Once shared their story, students seemed to believe they would be let back on the bus and that the situation was just a big misunderstanding. This did not happen and the situation quickly escalated. Black students began to yell at the officer demanding to be let on the bus and showing their tickets. The officer still denied them entry and called back up. Instead of trying to de-escalate the situation The two officers and three students ended up in a yelling match. The officers got up in the face of the students and continually repeated themselves, this was not productive for anyone on the scene. This gave the bus diver enough time to shut his doors and drive off. The students never got where they were heading and officers left the scene without helping the students. The police officers in any township, city, or state, job are to help the people in the domain they serve. This was not practiced in this situation. The policed barred these students from transportation and left then stranded. “If they were white what when down would have never ended the way it did” claims Alfred students witnessing the events.
