King Alfred Statue

August 2006

A statue of a D.W.E.M (Dead white European male). Is that symbol that represents our university. While it may not be a statue of a white confederate hero, his existence on this campus has the same undertone. For an institution with a goal of diversity and inclusion, King Alfred doesn’t represent that. His presence shows that we are still in an age where we phase white me and put them on a pedestal. Instead of highlighting individuals from marginalized groups that better represent what this university supposedly stands for.
